Our Hampshire gardens are kaleidoscopes of lush colour in summer. Magnificent scented rose displays, colour-packed herbaceous borders, and swathes of wildflowers combine to give joy and inspiration at every turn.
Mottisfont’s world-famous National Collection of old-fashioned shrub celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. Discover over 1,000 rose plants and more than 400 fragrant varieties, from densely flowering shrub roses to elegant ramblers and climbers. Some are so rare they aren’t on public show anywhere else. There are late evening openings, with jazz and wine on Fridays, plus hundreds of roses for sale.
Hinton’s rose guide takes you to its best, heavily fragrant displays, whilst in the house are beautiful floral arrangements, created in partnership with florists Bud and Flower (8 to 30 June). Don’t miss the kitchen garden, full of summer produce and vibrant companion planting.
Herbaceous borders are filled with foxgloves, paeonies and phlox – rich in nectar and pollen. In July the walled garden is a sea of wildflowers. There are sunflowers and sweetpeas for sale, and beautiful tree foliage around the lake.
A meadow orchard of wildflowers and seating beneath apple trees greets you as you come through the gate at Sandham. Behind the chapel, pretty cottage garden planting brings colour to raised beds. Note: Sandham is open Thursday to Sunday.
Winchester City Mill’s island garden is a unique opportunity to explore lush tropical-style planting whilst the famous river Itchen rushes by on both sides. It’s also a wonderful place to enjoy coffee, cake or maybe lunch – the garden doubles as the mill’s outdoor café.
Stretch your legs, run around, enjoy some peace and quiet and take in stunning views.
Adjoining the gardens are acres of beautiful parkland. Follow the ancient tree trail to discover some of its remarkable gnarled veterans, or simply enjoy soaking up the panoramic vista as you wander.
